SPANDEX PALACE PRO TIPS: Extend the Life of Your Leotards & Performance Wear

As a dancer, gymnast, or performer, your leotard is more than just an outfit—it's a second skin, a canvas for your artistry, and an investment in your passion. At SPANDEX PALACE, we know our premium Nylon Spandex Tricots and Hologram Foils are engineered for incredible flexibility and shine. But even the highest-quality fabrics need the right care to maintain their integrity and dazzling appearance.

As the leading authority in stretch fabrics, we’re here to share our expert tips to ensure your competition gear looks brand new, season after season.

Why Proper Care is Non-Negotiable for Performance Fabrics

Unlike everyday apparel, leotards and performance wear are crafted from specialized fabrics like 4-way stretch spandex, often adorned with delicate foils, sequins, and meshes. These materials are built for dynamic movement and visual impact. Incorrect washing or drying can lead to:

  • Loss of Stretch: Heat can damage the elastic fibers, causing the fabric to lose its recovery and fit.

  • Dullness & Peeling: Foils and metallics can dull, crack, or peel, ruining the garment's sparkle.

  • Color Bleeding: Vibrant dyes can bleed, staining other areas or garments.

  • Sequin Damage: Delicate sequins can fall off or become scratched and dull.

Leotard Laundry Like a Pro: The Official SPANDEX PALACE Care Guide

1. The Golden Rule: Hand Wash Only This is the single most important step. Machine washing, even on a delicate cycle, is too harsh for most performance fabrics.

  • Cold Water is Key: Fill a clean sink or basin with cold water. Hot water is the enemy of spandex!

  • Mild Detergent Only: Add a tiny amount of a pH-neutral, mild liquid detergent. We recommend sport-specific detergents or gentle baby shampoos. Absolutely avoid bleach, fabric softeners, or harsh chemicals.

  • Gentle Swish, No Scrub: Submerge your leotard and gently swish it around. Do NOT rub the fabric together, especially areas with foils, rhinestones, or sequins, as this can cause damage.

  • Rinse Thoroughly: Drain the soapy water and rinse the leotard under cold, running water until all detergent is gone.

2. Drying: Never Use Heat Heat is the fastest way to ruin your leotard's stretch and shine.

  • The Towel Roll Technique: Lay your leotard flat on a clean, light-colored towel. Roll the towel up with the leotard inside and gently press to absorb excess water. This avoids twisting or wringing which can distort the fabric.

  • Flat Dry Away from Sun: Unroll the towel and lay your leotard flat on a clean, dry surface or a drying rack, out of direct sunlight. Allow it to air dry completely. A machine dryer or direct sun exposure will damage the elastic fibers, cause foils to peel, and fade colors.

3. Smart Storage for Lasting Shine How you store your leotards can also impact their longevity.

  • Inside Out: Store garments inside out to protect any embellishments from snagging or rubbing.

  • Garment Bag Protection: For competition leotards, a breathable garment bag can protect against dust and friction.

  • No Ironing, Gentle Steaming: If your leotard develops wrinkles, use a garment steamer on the lowest setting, holding it several inches away from the fabric. Never apply a hot iron directly to spandex, foil, or sequins.
