The Spandex Palace Golden Rule: Avoid Heat and Friction

Heat, harsh chemicals, and friction are the natural enemies of all stretch and foil fabrics. High heat degrades the elastane (spandex) yarns, and friction can cause foil finishes to melt, peel, or lose their luster. Treat your garments with care, and they will keep you shining.

🧼 Step-by-Step Washing Instructions

1. Wash promptly. Wash your garment immediately after heavy perspiration or swimming. The natural acids in sweat, body oils, and harsh pool chemicals can dull the foil and break down spandex adhesives if left unwashed.
2. Turn inside out. Always turn the garment inside out before washing. This creates a barrier that protects the delicate foil finish from rubbing against the wash basin or your hands. Never rub foil surfaces together.
3. Hand wash cold only. Hand wash strictly and separately in a large volume of cold water. Machine washing is strongly discouraged for all foil and hologram prints.
4. Use a mild detergent. Use a gentle, pH-balanced liquid detergent (like a mild delicates wash). Gently swish the garment in the water — do not scrub, agitate, or twist.
5. Air dry only. Gently pat or squeeze the excess water out using a clean, dry towel. Do not wring or twist the fabric, as this can permanently crack the foil. Lay the garment flat to dry, or line dry out of direct sunlight.

⚠️ Important Warning: Colored Foil Sensitivity

While standard silver and clear holographic foils are somewhat resilient, colored foils — metallic reds, royal blues, hot pinks, emerald greens, and rich golds — are exceptionally sensitive.

Colored metallic finishes are created using specialized, vibrant dyes applied over the foil layer. Because of this top color layer, they require extra attention:

• Beware of color bleed. Colored foils are highly susceptible to color bleeding, fading, and dulling when exposed to friction, acidic sweat, or chemicals.
• Wash strictly alone. Always wash colored foil garments completely by themselves to prevent color transfer onto lighter fabrics.
• Never soak. Never allow colored foil garments to soak in water, and never leave damp garments balled up in a gym bag or laundry basket. Wash them quickly and dry them immediately.

Designer tip: If you are sewing a garment that mixes colored foil spandex with contrasting lighter fabrics (such as white mesh, nylon, or matte spandex), we highly recommend doing a wash test on a small fabric swatch prior to full garment construction to ensure colorfastness.

🚫 The “Do Nots” — What to Strictly Avoid

To protect your investment and keep your Spandex Palace fabrics looking brand new, never do the following:

• No machine washing or drying. The heavy agitation of a washer will rub the metallic finish completely off, and the heat of a dryer will melt the foil adhesive.
• No bleach or harsh chemicals. Do not use bleach, OxiClean, or harsh stain removers. They will instantly corrode the metallic coating.
• No fabric softeners. Liquid softeners and dryer sheets leave a chemical residue that destroys the adhesives holding the foil to the fabric, causing it to flake off.
• No irons or dry cleaning. Never iron spandex or foil, and do not take these fabrics to a dry cleaner. The extreme heat and harsh chemical solvents will ruin the fabric instantly.
• Avoid aerosols and lotions. Do not spray aerosol hairspray, perfume, sunscreen, or spray-on deodorant while wearing the garment. The alcohol and chemicals in these products will permanently dull the foil’s shine. Always apply lotions and sprays before putting your garment on, and let them dry completely.

A Note on Wear and Tear

Because foil and hologram designs are topical surface finishes, they will naturally experience some dulling and wear over time at high-friction points (such as under the arms or at the seat) with regular use. By following this care guide closely, you can significantly extend the life, stretch, and brilliance of your beautiful fabrics.
